EqualityDuring the Oscars last month, I had the sound muted for much of the time. But I happened to hear Patricia Arquette’s speech after receiving the Oscar for best supporting actress in Boyhood. Here’s what she said – a powerful statement about women’s equality:  “To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America!”

Did it make everyone happy? No! Of course, there was some backlash and here’s how she responded the next day. “It’s time for women. Equal means equal. The truth is the older women get, the less money they make. The highest percentage of children living in poverty are in female-headed households. It’s inexcusable. We go around the world talking about equal rights for women in other countries … and we don’t have equal rights for women in America. The truth is even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, there are huge issues that are at play that really do affect women.”

She was definitely supported by Meryl Streep, J-Lo and many others in the audience. I was cheering her on from my living room. It’s 2015 … time to get ‘er done!!  :-)
