Marea Bishop

Of the many things that can be learned from Marea Whitaker Bishop’s story, one of the most important is that inspiration can be found anywhere. At a time when she needed it the most, Marea found healing through photographing nature. She later created Photography by Marea.

One day while hiking through the nearby forest, Marea came across a marsh which was covered with thousands of lotus blossoms. Marea didn’t know it at the time, but these photos of the four stages of the lotus flower would play an intricate role in her “second phase” of life.

Stages of Life

Stages of Life

The four stages of the lotus represent the different phases of life. We start with the process of being born (a new lotus bud), growing up (the bud opening to a flower), identifying and living our life’s purpose (the flower in full bloom), and dying.

Marea is always inspired by the metaphors in nature, and applies these lessons in her everyday life. The beauty in the lotus flower’s stages is that, while it is a story of death, it is also one of rebirth. As Marea says, “Only in allowing the death of these blossoms can new beginnings emerge.” There have been a number of lotus flowers that have bloomed and died throughout Marea’s life, each one teaching her something about herself, love, and new beginnings. She continues, “As nature starts over, so will I. Regardless of the circumstances, I will always survive. I will always come back strong.”
